Our Special Event of November 2017: Kitti Kolmont

Meet Kitti – An entrepreneur living in paradise

Kitti started her journey from hotel receptionist to entrepreneur 2 years ago. After studying tourism and hotel management in Budapest, Kitti has lived in the UK, Sint Maarten, Madrid, Gran Canaria and Tenerife while working in various hotels. She has always had a passion for tourism and dreamed of doing her part in democratising and humanising the tourism industry.

Kitti is now the Founder of the Roots N’ Joy startup here in beautiful Tenerife, which she now calls home. Roots N’ Joy is a platform that brings people together through travellers’ meetups. It provides a great way to meet new people, share cultures and enjoy unique experiences, organized by local experts of the island.

Kitti also had the amazing opportunity to join the Imagine Creativity Center in Silicon Valley earlier this year. She was one of just 12 talented people who were chosen to work on 4 disruptive projects that aim to make the world a better place.

Would you like to learn more about Kitti’s journey to becoming an entrepreneur? Well, you are in luck! Kitti will be joining us for this month’s presentation at Coworking in the Sun.

Why did you decide to move to Tenerife?

Because it offers many things to do all year around. I think Tenerife is the perfect combination of South America (kindness of people, music, dance, food, the way of life, climate) and Europe in terms of safety, education, governance and social wellness.

How do you earn an income now?

I get commission from the sales of travel experiences vía Roots N’ Joy.

How many hours do you work at an average on a usual day?

Approximately 8 hours. It depends on many things, sometimes only 3 hours, but other times up to 12 hours.

What would you consider to be one of the best tools for becoming a digital nomad?

Learn to work with people remotely, based on phone, e-mail, Skype, Slack and/or Trello.

Before doing so, you definitely need to get travel solo experiences, so as to improve your social skills.

Roots N’ Joy

How much have you travelled? Do you have a favourite place in the world?

I am not a digital nomad, but I lived in Hungary, UK, Sint Maarten, Madrid, Gran Canaria and now in Tenerife. …Tenerife is my number 1!!!

How do you manage the distance from family and friends?

Being away from your beloved ones is never easy. With the help of the Internet, it is easier to keep in touch than ever before. I also see my family generally twice a year.

Why do you consider Tenerife as a good place to be an entrepreneur and launch a Startup?

I think the quality and way of life is the best when compared to all the places I have visited or lived in. You can do many things with little money, compared to other places in Europe. The climate is great, the people are friendly and all these things contribute to a better work-life balance

Furthermore, there are many events, workshops and training sessions going on all year round where you can learn, improve your skills or simply network.

Roots N' Joy

What is Roots N’ Joy about?

Roots N’ Joy is a marketplace for travel experiences. These experiences are events and meetups, organized by travel-related professionals (guide, chef, winemaker, artist, etc)  and marketed to travellers and locals who want to get to know the island firsthand from the passionate local experts while meeting people with the same interests and sharing unforgettable moments with other group members.

My mission is to contribute to the democratization and humanization of the tourism industry in mass tourism destinations like the Canary islands.

What organizations would you recommend to get help about becoming an entrepreneur?

There are an increasing number of companies and institutions where entrepreneurs can find help, training and mentoring services on all the Canary Islands, but most things happen in the two capital cities, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Based on my experiences, I can recommend the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna (FGULL) and the Scientific and Technological Centre of Tenerife (Intech). These two organisations have the most events and programs for all persons, trying to start up or just wanting to learn more skills. Intech helped me to participate in an entrepreneurial program in Silicon Valley in July 2017.

Imagine Creativity Center Silicon Valley

What have you learned from your recent trip to Silicon Valley?

It was a great experience in terms of professional and personal growth. I have learned that, if you have the soul of a Dreamer, everything is possible. Being a Dreamer means many things, but I will explain it all personally on the 14th of November.

Kitti will be visiting Coworking in the Sun to share her experiences and knowledge on November 14th. Learn more about the events on Facebook and Meetup.
